Artist Statement
I was born in Concord, MA, and spent many summers on the North Shore. It greatly influenced my artwork, immersed in the works of Aldro Hibbard, Fitz Henry Lane, Willard Metcalf, and Wayne Beam Morrell, to name just a few. One of my earliest paintings was of "Mottif Number 1," A must-paint for any Cape Ann artist. This simple little fisherman's shack is the most painted building in the world! I painted it after the blizzard of 1978 had swept it out to sea; I depicted it as it was being reframed. This painting gained me entrance into the prestigious Copley Society of Art and led to a solo exhibition there. And so began my art career.
I like to paint for the sheer joy of it! Marc Chagall once said, "I want to paint the way a bird sings." That sums it up nicely. I paint primarily in oils. I adore the buttery texture. And all the beautiful colors one can obtain. I love capturing fleeting moments in time and celebrating them on canvas.
"In art, the hand can never execute anything higher than the heart can imagine.”
Ralph Waldo Emerson
